Create a public pay-as-you-throw-system based on containers with a smartlock

In Bergen, Norway WasteIQ records all hatch openings in any type of underground shared infrastructure.

In Bergen, Norway we implemented a cost-efficient framework for creating a city-wide incentive and reward system in public waste management. We collect data from all interactions with the access-controlled underground infrastructure, including both AVAC-systems (vacuum pipes) and underground containers. This way we get a full overview on volumes and recycling rates for both businesses and individual households. The data we collected is in a highly structured format, and is being used used to calculate a public fee reflecting actual behaviour. Less mixed waste means lower public fee. We are in pilot stages of including bin collection (RFID scanners and lift weights) into this system, to serve all kinds of waste infrastructure.
